Our History

In 1959, Dr. Vajiranath Lakshman de Silva, a newly graduated medical doctor, embarked on a pilgrimage to Sripada. During his journey, he witnessed the significant challenges faced by pilgrims due to the lack of medical aid. Moved by this experience, Dr. de Silva returned to Colombo with a resolute vision: to establish a movement dedicated to providing medical assistance at Sripada and other major religious events.

The Birth of the Movement

Dr. de Silva founded the Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement with the aim of addressing the immediate medical needs of pilgrims and participants in religious festivals. The name “Saukyadana” was chosen to reflect the movement’s mission—a freely given gift of health to the public. This vision extended beyond just providing medical aid; it encompassed improving overall access to healthcare and promoting health education.

Early Growth and Collaboration

From its inception, the movement quickly garnered support from medical professionals, nurses, and para-medical personnel. These dedicated individuals joined forces to advance the organization’s goals. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the movement began training groups of youth and school children in health and first aid. These trained volunteers became integral to the movement, contributing their skills and knowledge to various health initiatives.

Expanding Impact

As the movement grew, so did its scope and impact. The training programs expanded, creating a network of volunteers skilled in first aid and health awareness. These volunteers played a crucial role in organizing medical aid camps and providing community support. By focusing on training and education, the movement empowered individuals across Sri Lanka to take an active role in improving public health.

A National Initiative

Over the decades, the Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement evolved from its humble beginnings into a prominent national organization. Today, it boasts over 6,000 volunteers working across 12 districts. The organization’s focus remains on delivering first aid training, providing medical aid during emergencies, and running community health programs.

Ongoing Commitment

The organization continues to thrive, driven by its foundational vision and the dedication of its volunteers. By partnering with schools, medical professionals, and community leaders, the Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement remains committed to its mission of enhancing health and well-being throughout Sri Lanka. Its ongoing efforts reflect a deep commitment to fostering a healthier, more resilient community.
